SCALE WARBIRD RACING ASSOCIATION
Novice Class Racing Format Supplemental Rules
January 2000
Description of Event
This racing class is established as a means to attract new contestants with little or no racing experience, to participate in SWRA style pylon racing. Contestants may enter the same typical sport or trainer type aircraft that they usually fly. It is the most basic entry-level event possible, to allow newcomers to see if they enjoy racing, as a radio control flying activity, without acquiring any special aircraft or equipment.
Aircraft Requirements
Eligible aircraft shall be any commercially available sport or trainer aircraft, kit or ARF. Profile fuselages, delta wing, multi-engine, and any other aircraft such as quickie 500, formula one, etc., specifically designed for racing are prohibited. The maximum engine size for any aircraft shall be limited to the manufacturer’s recommended engine as indicated in the instruction manual, on the box top, or in national advertising. Proof of engine size legality is the burden of the contestant. Absolute maximum engine size for this class is .61 for 2-stroke and .91 for 4-stroke. All 2-stroke engines must be front intake, side exhaust design. Tuned pipe, tuned mufflers, and air chambered or supercharged engines are NOT allowed. Other racing-type accessories such as special wheels designed for racing applications do not meet the intent of this event and are NOT allowed. No fuel restrictions are imposed, but sport fuel (10-15% nitromethane) is recommended.
Safety Inspection
Aircraft must be safety inspected in accordance with the criteria established in the Mini-Reno warbird racing rules section of this handbook.
Scale Judging
There is no scale judging for this event, as the aircraft do not have to be scale models. Contestants are encouraged to bring their aircraft to the scale judging location for registration and safety inspection the Friday evening before the event begins.
Race Operations
Racing will be conducted on the standard SWRA course in accordance with other Mini-Reno warbird racing rules, except Novice pilots will only fly five laps to complete a heat. Novice class will have a break out time of 1 minute & 19 seconds, (one half of the fixed bracket Bronze class break out).
Pilot Eligibility
This class is open to contestants with limited or no prior radio controlled aircraft racing experience, who are not competing in other SWRA classes or other racing venues. Pilots in this class may have someone else fly their aircraft during the take off and landing portion of each heat. Pilots will lose their eligibility to compete in the Novice class when any of the following occur:
